Islamabad, Jan 12, IRNA -- Pervaiz Iqbal Cheema, a Pakistani professor in National Defense University (NDU) here Monday termed as mere threat, the statement by the head of the US Central Command General, David Petraeus, on US military's considering of impact of ‘possible action’ against Tehran.
Talking to IRNA the analyst added that US has been threatening Iran for a long time but it had, so far, failed in Iraq and Afghanistan thus couldn’t afford to start another conflict with Iran.
General David Petraeus has said the United States has developed contingency plans to deal with Iran’s nuclear facilities, insisting that they “can be bombed”.
Pervaiz Iqbal Cheema opined that if the US attacked Iran then it would be a great mistake and would place the whole region under a disastrous configuration.
He said that the United States, under the influence of Israel, continued to pressurize Iran through the UN and IAEA to have its nuclear program suspended.
The analyst said that Iran has repeatedly said that it is not after nuclear weapons and it only wants peaceful use of nuclear energy.
Iran being the signatory of Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) can use nuclear energy for peaceful means.
“Iran is an independent state and every state has a right to explore its resources”, analyst said.
“West should resolve Iran’s nuclear issue with peaceful means, war in the region is not in the interest of any body”, Cheema said.
He added that war is not the solution of any issue rather it creates more trouble in the long run. “War is not the positive approach”, the analyst said.
“Only Israel is in favor of attack on Iran because Israel had a tough time from Hizbollah and Iran had supported the stance of Hizbollah”, Pervaiz Iqbal Cheema opined.
The analyst was of the view that Israel does not want to see any other Muslim country challenging its monopoly of power”, he opined.
He said that Washington should learn that its desire to isolate Tehran with increasingly stiff sanctions would fail to stop Iran from enriching uranium. “The strategy of pressurization and coercion rarely produce desired results”, he viewed.
The United Nations Security Council has already imposed three rounds of sanctions against Iran. In addition, several western nations have warned that the Islamic republic will face harsher sanctions if it fails to halt its uranium enrichment program.
Iran says its nuclear program is solely meant for civilian applications of the technology and has called for the total eradication of all weapons of mass destruction.
Pervaiz Iqbal Cheema a professor is also a scholar of international repute. His articles have regularly appeared both in National as well as International Academic Journals, Popular Magazines and daily Newspapers. He has published more than 120 research articles and over 600 other general articles, columns etc./end
