Ex-Tehran prosecutor blamed for sending inmates to Kahrizak

TEHRAN, Jan. 10 (MNA) – The parliamentary probe into the Kahrizak incidents was released on Sunday in which it criticized former Tehran prosecutor general Saeed Mortazavi for sending 147 inmates to the Kahrizak detention center.
According to the parliamentary report, despite the fact that officials from the Evin prison had announced that it had free space for the detainees, Mortazavi was insistent on sending the 147 detainees to Kahrizak, located in south of Tehran.
The 147 inmates were held in a 70-meter room for four days without proper air conditioning in the company of 30 hooligans, the fact-finding committee explained.
The 147 were detained on July 9.
The detention center came to limelight after three inmates were tortured to death. Mohsen Rouholamini, Mohammad Kamrani, and Amir Javadifar were the three men who died at Kahrizak.
The fact-finding committee said the transfer of the detainees to Kahrizak on the orders of the then Tehran prosecutor was “unjustified”.
The officials responsible for the Kahrizak detention center had refused to accept the detainees but finally they where forced to house the prisoners in a 70-meter room on the orders of Mortazavi, the report added.
According to the report, the then Tehran prosecutor attended a meeting of the special parliamentary committee on July 28 and claimed that the three inmates had died of meningitis.
In the meeting with the committee members the former prosecutor had also claimed that the inmates were sent to Kahrizak because Evin prison lacked enough space, according to the report.
