Rudd urged to assure Games team safety

The Rudd government must guarantee the safety of all Commonwealth Games team members
or provide them with security briefings so they can make up their own minds about
going to India, the opposition says.

International security consultant Lloyd Bromfield, who has worked at the Sydney,
Athens and Beijing Olympic Games, and will work at the London Olympics in 2012, says
he is alarmed by New Delhi's lack of preparation for this year's Commonwealth Games.
"The worst-case scenario could be a major bombing," he told News Ltd.
Opposition sports spokesman Steve Ciobo says no gold medal is worth risking
athletes' lives.
"The Rudd government must provide an assurance to Australian athletes and their
families they will be completely safe," Mr Ciobo said in a statement.
"Anything less than an assurance requires full disclosure of the facts so athletes
and their families are in a position to make an informed decision."
Mr Ciobo said Labor had to be "upfront" about how much it knew of security
arrangements for the Delhi Games.
"Is it considering extra security precautions?" he said.
"What undertakings, if any, has the government received from the Indian government?
Australia needs to know now."
The Commonwealth Games will be held in India's capital in October.
