Govt urges Indian diaspora to invest in country

New Delhi, Jan 10, IRNA -- Government has urged the Indian diaspora to invest in the country under public-private partnership model.
Addressing the valedictory function of the 8th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas-2010 (PBD-2010) in New Delhi Saturday evening, President, Ms.Pratibha Devi Singh Patil said that the infrastructure financing need of the country will be over 500 billion US dollars in next five years.
Asking the overseas community to participate and benefit in India's growth story Patil said that India is the most preferred investment destination in the world as it has a strong capital market regulator and a strong central bank.
She said that India posted a growth of 6.7 per cent last fiscal and this will reach over seven percent this year. In the post crisis world, India is increasingly perceived as one of the main engine of growth and a safe destination for investment. It is also an emerging educational and technological hub.
Giving details of remittances from overseas Indians, Patil said that it reached over 50 billion dollars last year, which is highest in the world. Out of this, 20 billion dollars come from Persian Gulf. She said, the Indian Community Welfare Fund established in 18 countries will provide timely help to overseas Indians in distress.
The President said that Government is strongly taking up issues of protection and security of Indians, particularly students, with countries where they live.
The President also conferred the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards on 14 distinguished overseas Indians from different walks of life, who have made significant contribution for the welfare of diaspora; notable contribution in philanthropic and charitable work and for social and humanitarian causes in India & abroad and support to India’s causes and concerns in a tangible way.
In the acceptance speech on behalf of the awardees, Finance Minister of South Africa, Pravin Jamnadas Gordhan expressed his gratitude to the government of India and maintained that Indian diaspora would continue to work for the welfare & development of our own and other communities. “ India is playing a strong role in raising the voice of poor countries.”
The three-day event began Thursday, inaugurated by Minister for Overseas Affairs Vyalar Ravi. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh addressed PBD-2010 on Friday.
The event, which coincides with the date (9 January) on which Mahatma Gandhi returned to his native land from South Africa, has been organized every year since 2003 by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs in partnership with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)./end
