Ahmadinejad meets Syrian, Bahraini parliament speakers

TEHRAN, Jan. 9 (MNA) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad held talks with Syrian Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Abrash and Bahraini Parliament Speaker Khalifa Ahmad al-Zahrani in Tehran on Thursday.
During his meeting with Mahmoud al-Abrash, Ahmadinejad said Iran and Syria should increase their cooperation in order to help efforts to create a new world order.
Iran and Syria have a mission to set up a new world order on the basis of belief in God, justice, and humanity, the Iranian president stated.
“The future of the world depends on developments in the Middle East,” he added.
Iran and Syria have similar viewpoints and interests and common enemies, he noted.
“The resistance of nations like Iran and Syria has caused the global arrogance (imperialist powers) to reach an impasse in their Middle East policies,” he opined.
The Syrian parliament speaker said that Tehran and Damascus will stand side by side in a united front to continue their resistance against the global arrogance.
The two countries should boost their ties in order to thwart the plots of the enemies, he added.
Islamic unity will foil enemies’ plots
Ahmadinejad criticized the hegemonistic powers, saying they are trying to sow seeds of discord to create animosity between Islamic states.
“The vigilance, unity, and cooperation of Muslim nations will foil the enemies’ conspiracies, and those who sow the seeds of discord among Muslims and Islamic states are either ignorant or traitors,” he told the Bahraini parliament speaker.
Ahmadinejad said the “enemies of Islam” are responsible for the situation in Yemen, adding, “The enemies foment discord among Muslims in order to thwart their efforts to make progress.”
The conflict between the Yemeni government and Houthi fighters in northern Yemen began in 2004. It intensified in August 2009 when the Yemeni army launched Operation Scorched Earth in an attempt to crush Shia Houthi fighters in the northern province of Saada.
The government claims that the fighters, who are named after their leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi, seek to restore the Shia imamate system, which was overthrown in a 1962 military coup.
However, the Houthis say they are defending their people’s civil rights, which the government has undermined under pressure from Saudi-backed Wahhabi extremists. Shias, who form the clear majority in the north, make up approximately 40 to 50 percent of Yemen’s total population.
Pointing to the importance of unity among Muslim states, Ahmadinejad said the arrogant powers created Israel and started wars in the region with the aim of dominating Muslims and Islamic countries.
“The unity and solidarity of Islamic countries would have prevented the massacre of millions of people in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Palestine,” he opined.
The Bahraini parliament speaker said that the enemies’ efforts to instigate violence in Islamic countries will backfire and their plots will actually strengthen Muslims’ relations.
