Warnings of possible Todd River flood
The threat of flooding in Alice Springs has lessened with rain easing.
The flood threat level was lowered to a category B at 1.15pm (CST) on Saturday after
emergency services deemed there was no longer an immediate risk.
Residents earlier had been told to be ready to evacuate with fears the Todd River
could flood if the rain didn't stop.
But the emergency services later said: "The threat of localised flooding in Alice
Springs has abated with rain easing in the past few hours."
"The Alice Springs Counter Disaster Committee met (Saturday) morning after flood
threat level reached Category C," they said in the statement.
"The towns Flood Plan was activated and Northern Territory Emergency Service
Volunteers door knocked residences along the Todd River in the flood prone area.
"Residents were urged to make preparations in the event they may have to be evacuated."
But motorists were advised to still check conditions on the Stuart Highway north of
Ti Tree before heading that way.
"Motorists should still check road conditions before attempting to travel as the
Stuart Highway and unsealed road to most remote communities are still impassable,"
police said in a statement.
Residents have been urged to continue to listen for updated advice on the radio.
Motorists are urged to check the road conditions before their trip by phoning the
Department of Planning and Infrastructure road conditions hotline 1800 246 199 or
