Iran-Turkmenistan gas pipeline inaugurated

ASHGABAT, Jan. 7 (MNA) - The first phase of the second pipeline transferring Turkmenistan’s gas to Iran came on stream officially on Wednesday in a ceremony attended by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his Turkmen counterpart Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov.
The 31-kilometer link starts at the Dovletebad gas field in southeastern Turkmenistan, close to the Iranian border. It is one of the most important joint projects carried out by the two countries.
The pipeline will increase the volume of gas transferred from Turkmenistan to Iran to 14 billion cubic meters annually from the current 8bcm.
The second phase of the pipeline project started simultaneous with the inauguration of the first phase to boost the transfer capacity to 45 million cubic meters per day, SHANA news agency reported.
Iran sits atop the world’s second-largest natural gas reserves after Russia, and has long sought to promote itself as a transit route for oil and gas from Central Asian states.
Turkmenistan, Central Asia’s biggest gas producer, is seen as one of the key suppliers for the planned Nabucco pipeline from Turkey to Austria, designed to ease Europe’s dependence on Russia for gas supplies.
During his stay in Turkmenistan the Iranian president is also scheduled to attend the groundbreaking ceremony of the $650 million Atrak-Gorgan railway project which will link railroad networks of the two countries.
