Sixfold increase in Iran's handicraft exports
TEHRAN, Jan. 7 (MNA) – Handicraft exports from March 21 (the starting of the Iranian calendar year) to November soared six times compared to the last year.
The director of commercial affairs of Iran Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization said that in the past 8 months about $106 million worth of handicrafts had been exported showing a 600 percent surge compared to the same period the year before.
Ahmad Balan said around 5.2 million people are active in 250 fields of handicraft in the country.
The official pointed out that handicraft currently accounted for 3 percent of Iran’s gross national product, which he said plans were under way to raise it to 6 percent.
