Ponting remains most marketable Australian athlete

Melbourne, Jun 12 (PTI) - Ricky Ponting remains Australia's
most marketable athlete and cricketers, both retired and
contemporary, occupy six of the top 10 places in the chart,
according to a recent study here.
A Sweeney Sports Report study of Australia's most marketable sportspersons found six of the top 10 are either current or past cricketers, while Ponting clings on to the top spot for the second year running.
Just-retired stumper-batsman Adam Gilchrist follows his former captain at number two, ahead of swimmers Grant Hackett and Ian 'Thorpedo' Thorpe.
Pace spearhead is fifth, ahead of retired new ball colleague Glenn McGrath.
Soccer star Harry Kewell is placed seventh, followed by tennis ace Patrick Rafter, former cricket captain Steve Waugh and all-rounder Andrew Symonds.
Though he is through with international cricket, Cricket
Australia Spin Bowling Ambassador Shane Warne is at number 15, while newly appointed vice-captain Michael Clarke is joint 20th.
Cricket Australia Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland said the strong performance of cricketers in the marketability study was consistent with recent research showing Australians regarded their cricket team as good role models.
"That study showed 82 percent of Australians thought the players were good role models for children. Other recent research shows cricket is the most watched sport on TV – Australians love their cricket and this is a tribute to the players' on field success, but also to the way they carry themselves," an elated Sutherland said.
