Residents demand role in solution of Map Ta Phut problems
BANGKOK, Jan 6 (TNA) – Map Ta Phut area resident representatives descended upon Government House Wednesday, submitting a letter for former prime minister Anand Panyarachun demanding to join the committee appointed by the Abhisit government to resolve the industrial estate’s environmental problems.
Representatives from 20 Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate area communities in the eastern province of Rayong went to Government House to present their petition to Mr Anand in his role as chairman of the four-party committee on resolving the Map Ta Phut problems.
The residents say that because they work and live at Map Ta Phut, they want to play a role in finding the solution.
The panel's members comprise representatives from the civil, business, and government sectors as well as academics who are environment experts. However, no Map Ta Phut residents are represented.
Representatives of the local residents said they had met once with the Anand panel as committee members inspected the Map Ta Phut area.
Workers living in the area are in economic trouble, they said, as the economy is faltering. Many row houses normally rented to workers are vacant as major companies lay off employees who return home with no jobs.
Local residents need the government to find a resolution that properly benefits locals, they said.
In September a Central Administrative Court injunction ordered the suspension of 76 industrial projects at Map Ta Phut due to environmental concerns. The injunction followed complaints from residents and environmental groups that state agencies had failed to issue proper operating licences for the industrial projects.
The Supreme Administrative Court later allowed 11 of the 76 projects to continue operating, while 65 will remain shuttered until they comply with the environmental and health requirements of Section 67 of the 2007 Constitution.
The Central Administrative Court later cleared Siam Yamato Steel (SYS) to resume operations at the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate after earlier being suspended as part of the group of 65 projects affected by the court order. (TNA)
