Iranian cartoonists win top prizes at Indian contest

TEHRAN, Jan. 5 (MNA) -- Iranian cartoonists Vahid Jafari and Salam Mohammadi have respectively won the first and second awards at the International Manmohan Singh -- Sonia Gandhi Caricature Contest.

Jafari and Salam Mohammadi received the accolades for their entries in the Manmohan Singh Caricature Section and Sandeep Adhwaryu from India won the third prize in this section.

The first and second prizes of the Sonia Gandhi Caricature Section remained at home for the work submitted by B.N. Biswal and Satish Sringeri while the Bulgarian cartoonist Valentin Georgien received the third place award in this section.

The Indian Institute of Cartoonists (IIC) held the competition whose only criterion for entry was how well applicants had drawn caricatures of Manmohan singh and Sonia Gandhi.

A total of 625 caricatures by cartoonist from across the world were submitted to the contest. The winners were announced in the IIC website late last week.

The organizers introduced Manmohan Singh on their website as India’s 14th prime minister who has the arduous task of fulfilling a billion dreams of peace, prosperity and development.

They also described Sonia Gandhi as a towering national leader of India, a woman of courage and remarkable resilience, and the architect of the UPA Government.
