Vigilance urged after 10 people drown

Ten people have drowned across Australia since Christmas Eve, prompting lifesavers
to again urge vigilance around water.
In the latest incident, a teenage boy died after being swept into a swollen creek in
Brisbane's south.
Somali immigrant Salman Arte went missing about 1.30pm (AEST) on Tuesday while
playing with three of his brothers in Bulimba Creek at Wishart.
The body of the 13-year-old was recovered on Wednesday.
"Ten drowning deaths in just six days is deeply alarming," Royal Life Saving Society
Australia's chief operating officer Justin Scarr said in a statement on Wednesday.
"It highlights that we must be very very careful when enjoying the fun of the
aquatic environment."
He urged people to swim only in recognised swimming locations, such as patrolled
beaches or swimming pools.
"If you are going boating, make sure you've taken all the right safety precautions
and use personal flotation devices (lifejackets)," he said.
"It's critical children are constantly supervised around water."
Mr Scarr also reminded people never to cross flooded roadways and to ensure pool
fencing was in good working order.
