NO PLAN FOR JOINT MILITARY EXERCISE WITH US : TNI CHIEF
Batam, June 11 (ANTARA) - During times of peace the Indonesian military must regularly hold exercises, including with other countries but at present there was no plan to do it with the United States, National Defense Forces (TNI) Commander Gen Djoko Santoso said here on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters after the conclusion of a joint military exercise codenamed 'Yudha Siaga' here on Wednesday, the TNI chief said the Indonesian military usually staged such maneuvers with Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, and Australia.
"In Thailand recently, TNI personnel also took part in the 'Cobra Gold' military exercise with participants from five other countries," Santoso said.
He said military cooperation with other countries also included education and student exchange programs, and reciprocal visits.
Santoso said joint military exercises with Malaysia and Singapore were held especially in relation with joint efforts to maintain security in the Malacca Strait but so far there was no plan to do it with the United States.
The same exercise was also conducted last Saturday at Ranai military airport and Sengiap beach in Natuna District, Riau Islands Province, and will be continued on Thursday next week in Singkawang, West Kalimantan and ended in Sangatta, East Kalimantan, in the middle of this month.
The TNI chief expressed hope that such a joint military exercise could be conducted once every three or five years to maintain and improve professionalism.
