Iran will show no leniency to rioters: interior minister

TEHRAN, Jan. 4 (MNA) -- Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar has said that Iran will not show any leniency to rioters in the future.
“(We) have ordered the police force not to show any leniency to rioters from now on, and if a person appears to cooperate with rioters in protests, (they) will be arrested immediately,” Najjar told reporters on Saturday.
Iran has experienced sporadic violence due to the protests at the results of the June 12 presidential election. On December 27, which was Ashura day, protesters took to the streets in central Tehran and chanted slogans against top government officials. They clashed with the police and damaged public property. Some of them also committed acts that disrespected religious sanctities.
Ashura is the tenth day of the lunar month of Muharram and the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) and his 72 companions.
Najjar stated that the rioting was organized with the support of Britain, Israel, and the United States.
The pre-planned protests were directed by foreigners, he said, adding that some counter-revolutionary groups were also involved in the riots.
