70 die in road accidents on 4th of ‘seven high risk travel days’

BANGKOK, Jan 2 (TNA) -- Seventy persons were killed and 737 others were injured in 686 road accidents throughout Thailand on New Year’s Day, the fourth day of the ‘seven high risk travel days’, a senior government official said Saturday.

Uthairat Chaiprasert, assistant to the justice minister, told a press conference that about half the accidents involved drunken driving, followed by speeding at 21 per cent, with most incidents taking place between 4pm and 8pm.

Cumulative casualties from highway accidents since the government’s safe driving campaign began Tuesday now stands at 238 killed, 2,725 injured in 2,510 accidents nationwide.

This year’s campaign target lowering casualties by 5 per cent from last year, when the comparable figure was 367 people dead and 4,107 injured.

Director-General Anucha Mokaves of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said police and officials manning checkpoints were instructed to take legal action against speeding or drunken drivers and those wearing helmets while driving motorcycles. (TNA)
