Police officer shoots man after pursuit
A man will undergo surgery for a bullet wound after a police officer shot him in the
arm following a car chase in southern Queensland.
Police say officers at Clintonvale, near Warwick, began pursuing a suspected stolen
car at about 4.55pm (AEST) on Thursday.
The driver was well-known to police, and it was believed he had a firearm, they said.
Stingers were deployed, deflating two of the car's tyres but the car continued for
some distance before coming to a halt.
Police intercepted the car in Kadows Road and as they approached it, at about
5.20pm, one of the officers discharged his firearm.
The 24-year-old driver allegedly fled on foot and when police caught him a short
time later they realised he had a bullet wound to the arm.
The injury was not life-threatening, and he was transferred from Warwick Hospital to
Princess Alexandra Hospital under police escort to undergo surgery on Friday.
His 25-year-old male passenger was arrested at the scene and has been charged with
two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and obstructing police.
He was released on bail to appear in Warwick Magistrates Court on February 9.
Deputy Commissioner Kathy Rynders said the ethical standards command would
investigate the shooting, overseen by the Crime and Misconduct Commission.
Ms Rynders said she was waiting for a full report on the incident.
"My understanding is the officer feared for his safety and subsequently discharged
his firearm," she told reporters.
"Any occasion where police have to use force in relation to members of the public is
obviously cause for concern.
"What we need to ensure is the use of force is appropriate given all the
circumstances, and that's why ethical standards command was detailed to immediately
attend and investigate the incident."
