World must force Israel to lift Gaza siege, say MPs

London, Dec 28, IRNA – An all-party group of British MPs Sunday called on the UK government and international community to force Israel to abide by international law and lift its continuing siege of Gaza.

“We call upon all parties to alleviate the suffering of the people of Gaza,” some 30 MPs said in open letter to mark the first anniversary of the start of Israel's latest slaughter of more than 1,400 Palestinians.

Specifically the British government and the international community must “apply meaningful pressure upon Israel to abide by UN Security Council Resolution 1860, to end this flagrant abuse of international law and lift the blockade,” the letter said.

Signatories include Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg, Conservative front-bench spokesman and former Labour ministers as well as Richard Burden, chair of the Britain Palestine All Party Parliamentary Group.

"The people of Gaza are sheltering throughout the winter in inadequate acommodation, living off food aid and wondering why the world has forgotten about them.” Said Burden.

“This intolerable situation is not the result of an act of nature however, it is the result of a political decision. The suffering could end tomorrow,” he said.

According to a copy of the letter obtained by IRNA, the British government was reminded that that Israel’s latest massacres included 352 children as well as the destruction and damage to 50,000 homes, 280 schools and kindergartens and numerous hospitals.

One year on, the Israeli regime “still prevents reconstruction materials and humanitarian aid from reaching the territory's shattered infrastructure and population,” it said.

“The confinement and punishment of an entire population is no way to bring about peace for all of the people of the Middle East,” the MPs warned.

To mark the anniversary, a series of demonstrations, vigils and rallies were being held across Britain, including outside the Israel Embassy in London.

Last week, more than a dozen British aid agencies and human rights organisations castigated the international community for failing to end Israel’s siege of Gaza, which started over three years ago./end
