Analyst stresses to resolve Iran’s nuclear issue through dialog

Islamabad, Dec 28, IRNA – A senior political analyst and Pakistan Muslim League’s Secretary General Mushahid Hussain Sayed has stressed the need to resolve Iran’s nuclear issue through dialog and not through sanctions.

Talking to IRNA, he strongly condemned the new deadline set by the US government pressurizing Iran to accept a deal on its nuclear program by the end of December, or face new international sanctions.

“The dialog was the only way out of Iran’s nuclear issue, or else the region would face serious crises with uncontrollable consequences”, he viewed.

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has dismissed the US ultimatum over the nuclear program.

Western powers have also warned Iran that if it wants to avoid tough new sanctions then time is running out to accept a UN-brokered deal to swap its enriched uranium for nuclear fuel.

Under the draft deal, most of Iran's existing low-grade enriched uranium would be shipped to Russia and France by the end of the year, where it would be processed into fuel rods with the purity of 20 percent.

The higher-level enriched uranium would be transported back to Iran to be used in the research reactors.

The US has raised the threat of a fourth round of UN sanctions against Iran, but still needs to convince Russia and China to drop their longstanding reluctance to consider tougher measures.

Mushahid said it was the height of irresponsibility on the part of US authorities to talk of war on Iran.

“The falling economy of US cannot bear the burden of another war”, he opined.

He said that one of the major lessons from the history is that the military might was not an answer to political problems.

The political analyst was of the view that another reason of pressure on Iran’s nuclear program is that Israel wants to divert the world’s attention from the long standing issue of Palestine that is why the lobby of Israel is talking about sanctions or war against Iran.

Mushahid said that the report by the US National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) has also revealed that Iran does not intend to acquire nuclear weapons.

He appreciated Russia's role in resolving Iran’s nuclear issue and complimented positive steps it has taken in this regard.

The analyst urged the US President Barack Obama to develop good relations with Iran, as it was a necessity. “US relations with Iran could be very useful in solving the issues of region especially the issue of Afghanistan”, he believed.

Mushahid Hussain Sayed recently completed a six-year term as Senator and Chairman, Foreign Relations Committee of the Senate.

He has been a Cabinet Minister, Journalist, university teacher and political analyst./end
