NA VICE PRESIDENT IS IN ATTENDENCE AT IPU MEETING

June 10 (KPL) - Vice President of National Assembly Ms Pany Yathotou and her delegation left here on 12 April to attend the 118th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union meeting in Cape Town, South Africa, from 13 to 18 April. The attendance was to respond the invitation of Ms Baleka Mbete, President Assembly of South Africa. There were 600 Parliament members and 600 representative of International Organisation in the region and mass media, and 50 delegations of Parliament Presidents attended at the meeting. The meeting related to a number of current outstanding problems on politic, economy and society worldwide. The meeting also focused on migrant workers, people trafficking, xenophobia and human rights, role of parliaments in striking a balance between national security, human security and individual freedoms, and in averting the threat to democracy. The meeting has also reviewed the implementation of UN millennium development goals of women and children. The Inter-Parliamentary Union was established in 1889, at present there are 140 member countries with over 40,000 members worldwide. The Lao National Assembly become as a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in 1991.
