South Thailand warned of effects from Philippine volcano eruption

BANGKOK, Dec 26 (TNA) -- Hospitals in southern Thailand have been warned of possible negative effects from the possible eruption of the Mayon volcano in the Philippines about people suffering from asthma or other breathing difficulties a spokesman of the Public Health Ministry said Saturday.

The spokesman said that dust and smog from the volcano could pose breathing problems for people in southern Thailand and that the ministry had ordered hospitals in the region to closely monitor developments of the volcanic eruption.

People with asthma will cough more often and this could cause a lung infection if they happen to inhale the smog, the spokesman said. Such persons should avoid staying in an open spaces and stay inside their homes or in air-conditioned rooms.

According to an international news report quoting the chief of the Philippine government’s volcanology team monitoring Mayon, the volcano has been oozing lava for weeks and is emitting gas and ash, signs of a powerful eruption any day now.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said it has kept Mayon on alert level four – meaning that a hazardous eruption could occur within days, according to the report.

A medical doctor who is an expert on asthma and diseases related to the respiratory system at Bangkok’s Srinakharinwirot University’s Faculty of Medicine said if the toxic substance from the volcano eruption is smaller than five microns then it is dangerous because of the difficulty in preventing it from being inhaled.
