Thai PM to meet with coalition party leaders on charter amendments

BANGKOK, Dec 26 (TNA) -- In a move to create reconciliation in Thailand, especially among the country's political parties, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said Saturday that he will meet party leaders in his coalition government to discuss the proposed charter amendments before the House of Representatives reopens in its ordinary session early next year.

Mr Abhisit said he still had not discussed with Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban regarding his discussions with parties in the coalition on charter amendments Friday.

“I want to see the charter amendments lead to reconciliation [among the people]," Mr Abhisit said. "There will be a problem if the Constitution is amended but conflict persists.”.

He insisted that a public referendum is also needed if the charter is to be amended, which is opposed by the opposition Puea Thai Party.

The said the government is “not buying time” and that the proposed amendment must be agreed by every party.

The opposition party has withdrawn from the move, the prime minister said, so it would be useless to make amendments if conflicts persist.

The government earlier proposed that six clauses in the 2007 Constitution be amended, but the Puea Thai Party demanded that the 1997 Constitution, abolished following the September 2006 bloodless coup, be restored. (TNA)
