Thai PM calls for world community to help Hmong
BANGKOK, Dec 25 (TNA) – Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Friday called on other countries to extend their assistance in taking ethnic Hmong from Thailand.
Mr Abhisit said countries that expressed concern about the repatriation of Hmong to Laos could assist Thailand by taking the issue into their hands.
Any country wanting to help the Hmong can cooperate with Thailand in repatriating them to a third country, he added.
Asked about calls from the United States and the United Nations (UN) for Thailand to drop the plan to send 4,200 Hmong back to Laos for human rights reason, the premier said there are several groups of Hmong in Thailand and their status are different.
Hmong in Phetchabun entered Thailand illegally and Laos has confirmed that thousands of Hmong who were deported earlier are safe and no execution was taken against them, he said.
"We also want Laos to explain to those who are concerned about the deportation," said Mr Abhisit. "Several countries said they want to take the Hmong to their countries but not a country takes any action."
“Thailand currently shelters 3,000-4,000 Hmong and their living conditions are not good but we will send them back only if we are assured that they will live in better living conditions,” said the premier. (TNA)
