Xmas Eve fatality-free on nation's roads
Christmas Eve has remained fatality-free on Australia's roads, but a new report of a
man's death following a crash in Victoria three days ago has pushed the national
holiday toll to 36.
Police said a car struck three cyclists from behind in Breamlea Road, Connewarre,
near Geelong, about 8.20am (AEDT) on Monday.
Rex Sizeland, 66, from nearby Torquay was taken to The Alfred hospital where he died
the following day.
The second male cyclist from Jan Juc suffered non-life threatening injuries and a
third man, from Torquay, was not injured.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
Mr Sizeland's death brings Victoria's road toll to 286, 12 fewer than at the same
time last year.
Victoria's Christmas holiday toll stands at nine.
Late on Wednesday, a man died in a Perth hospital hours after a two-car collision in
Perth's northern suburbs.
The collision occurred at the corner of Wanneroo Road and King Drive in Woodvale
about 2pm (WST) on Wednesday, police said.
A 54-year-old man in one car and a man and a woman from the other car, both aged 75,
were injured and were taken to the Joondalup hospital.
The 75-year-old man later died at the hospital.
The death takes Western Australia's holiday road toll to six.
(EDS: National road toll figures are for the period 0001 December 18 to 2359 January
3. Some states and territories have different periods.)
