Series of anti-govt protests planned in BKK next week

BANGKOK, Dec 24 (TNA) Thailand's anti-government United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) on Thursday announced its planned rallies at several spots in the Thai capital including the Foreign Ministry in another show of dissatisfaction against the Democrat-led coalition government.

Mr Suporn Atthawong, a key leader of the UDD whose members symbolise themselves with red shirts, said that the rally outside the Foreign Ministry is aimed at opposing Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya, who, since assuming his portfolio, has focused only on retaliating ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

Before the year end, he added, the Red Shirts have also planned to stage protests in several spots in Bangkok including the Constitution Court and the Office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC).

He said the rallies will be similar to Wednesday's Red Shirt protest outside the office of the Election Commission. Hundreds of people, led by singer-turned-politician Arisman Pongruangrong, blocked the
entrance of the EC office to protest against what they branded the EC's double-standard practice.

EC members have not ruled on a case involving the dissolution of the Democrat Party in light of an accusation against the party for unlawfully obtaining Bt258-million donations from TPI Polene Co. The EC however
resolved to let its chairman decide whether the case should be forwarded to the Constitution Court.

Mr Suporn, currently on bail after allegedly inciting chaos in the public last mid-April, said he and Mr Arisman are not worried if police revoke the bails and vowed to carry on with the political movement.

The UDD leader added that another demonstration, planned by another group under Somyos Preuksakasemsuk at Sanam Luang on Dec 27-28 is not in line with the UDD resolution and Red Shirt leaders will not join the activity or assume responsibility in case of violence.

Meanwhile, EC secretary-general Suthipol Thaweechaikarn said he has requested police to provide security at the residences of the EC chairman and four members after Red Shirt protesters threatened to burn their
houses.

The EC secretary-general described the Red Shirts' threat as aggressive, adding that police have monitored and recorded the group's protest in front of the EC office on Wednesday.

He insisted that all EC members have thoroughly looked into the evidence, facts and rules of law involving the case and they do not favour any particular party whether the government or the opposition." (TNA)
