MONTSAME NAMES 10 HIGHLIGHTS WORLDWIDE
Ulaanbaatar, /MONTSAME/ National News Agency MONTSAME names ten highlights worldwide in 2009.
1. United Nations Climate Conference, attended by some 15,000 delegates from 193 nations, among them state and government leaders of 110 countries, was held in Copenhagen December 7-18, 2009. The so-called Copenhagen Accord, which released at the Conference, aimed at keeping temperature rise to no more than 2C.
2. Global financial and economic criris is continuing. The 3rd G-20 Summit was organized in Pittsburgh to tackle the economic crisis in the world. The Pittsburgh G-20 Summit marks a critical transition from the crisis to recovery. The G-20 adopted President Obama’s proposed Framework for Strong, Sustainable and Balanced Growth, which outlines a process for economic cooperation and coordination to help ensure that post-crisis policies avoid a return to dangerous imbalances that undermine long-term economic growth. This is the first time such a large number of countries–the G-20 accounts for 85 percent of world output-- have agreed to work together to assess each others’ economic plans, reach consensus on best practices for reforms needed, and to adopt policies supporting the necessary rebalancing of global demand to ensure strong growth for all.
3. Swine flu or H1N1 influenza spread worldwide and there are 10,582 confirmed deaths worldwide as of the first half of December.
4. European Union welcomes new constitution with ceremony in Lisbon, where the text was first signed; new constitution lays out series of fundamental changes within the EU, including creating the bloc's first permanent president. The European Union's constitution has come into force, after years in the making. The first EU president also took office along with the bloc's new foreign policy chief.
5. The USA announced a new strategy towards Afghanistan and is to send 30,000 new U.S. troops to Afghanistan.
6. Obama made a decision to scale back a plan for a missile defense system in Czech Republic and Poland, and agreed with Russia to conclude a follow-on treaty to START as the first action in a step-by-step process of reducing their strategic nuclear arsenals with the ultimate goal of achieving a nuclear-free world. This ambitious objective will require broadening past U.S.-Russian nuclear arms control efforts, for example, to include non-deployed strategic nuclear warheads and tactical nuclear weapons, which have not been limited previously.
7. A riot happened in XinJiang Uigar Autonomous Region of China and 197 people were killed and 160 were injured.
8. Germany celebrated the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall with a "Festival of Freedom" with dignitaries from around the world. The Berlin Wall was a concrete barrier built by the German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) that completely enclosed the city of West Berlin, separating it from East Germany, including East Berlin.
9. North Korea withdrew from six-party nuclear talks. Pyongyang made the decision after international condemnation of its long range missile test.
10. Pop music legend Michael Jackson died of a heart attack in Los Angeles, just weeks before his concerts in London.
Air France A330-200 aircraft was on a scheduled international flight from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to Paris, France. The aircraft departed late on 31 May 2009 from Rio, and crashed in the Atlantic Ocean killing 216 passengers and 12 crew members on board, representing 32 nationalities.
