Jalili: Disarmament should become a world public opinion demand

Tehran, Dec 22, IRNA – Iran’s top national security official Saeed Jalili said the issue of disarmament should become the demand of the world public opinion.

Talking to reporters in Tokyo, Jalili who is the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) in Iran said failure of certain big powers to abide by international laws in different domains, including nuclear rights, makes the issue of global disarmament a pressing and urgent topic.

Pointing out that he is visiting a country which is a victim of proliferation of nuclear arms, he hoped the case of Hiroshima atomic bombing be the last in the list of aggressions of this kind.

He said those big powers which embarked on producing nuclear arms first and is currently continuing with their atomic tests escape the pressure of the world public opinion for disarmament by resorting to false and hollow propaganda ploys.

Describing the Zionist regime as an outstanding example of the dual policies adopted by some countries, he addressed those countries “which issued three anti-Iran resolutions just because of a few centrifuges Iran possesses for its peaceful nuclear activities” and said “what you have done in the face of equipping the Zionist regime with nuclear arms?”

He said the very same countries which are advocating Israel’s nuclear armaments, refrained from doing the least possible to oppose the use of chemical weapons by the toppled Iraqi President Saddam Hussein against the Iranian nation.

The SNSC chief also stressed that the best way to implement a global disarmament was to strengthen the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and enhance the level and scope of monitoring activities by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

He also said countries should have the right to use nuclear energy for their peaceful programs in return for their complying with international regulations.
