Larijani stresses need for unity among Islamic states

Tehran, Dec 22, IRNA – Iran's Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani stressed the need for unity of the Islamic Ummah as well as solidarity among Muslim countries.

The speaker made the remarks in a meeting with the prominent Egyptian journalist and historian Mohamed Hassanein Heikal in Cairo Monday night.

During the meeting, Larijani outlined the situation in the region especially in such countries as Palestine, Afghanistan and Iraq and expressed his views on the presence of US forces in the region.

He said the Americans and Zionists were basically after highlighting disagreements in a bid to create gaps within the Islamic Ummah.

Heikal said the presence of the Iranian speaker in Egypt was a positive and important development.

He went on to express his views on the most important regional issues, the global economic crisis, the situation of the United States in the world and the Palestinian issue.

He further called on the Islamic Republic of Iran to play a more effective role in enhancing unity among Islamic countries.

Larijani also participated in a banquet given by his Egyptian counterpart yesterday night.

The Majlis speaker is in Egypt to attend the Amendment and Review Committee meeting of the Islamic Inter-Parliamentary Union which started work on Monday./end
