Beirut, Dec 22, IRNA – Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said that Iran favors most friendly ties with Lebanon, adding that Beirut is now in the process of restoring stability.
Mottaki made the remarks at a press conference before departing from Lebanon.
According to IRNA correspondent in Beirut, Mottaki added: “We stand by the side of the Lebanese nation, respect the entire Lebanese political groups and the Lebanese people have proved their country is by no means in need of foreign interference in their internal affairs.”
He added, “The former US president George (W.) Bush once woke up from his night sleep and said the election of the Lebanese President should be in such and such a manner, which proved he was unaware of the mechanism of laws in Lebanon.
“Lebanon has proved it is no in need for foreign interference and that the Lebanese nation is capable of solving its own problems all by itself and today the opportunity for cooperation between Iran and Lebanon is greater than ever before,” Mottaki continued.
Pointing out that his talks with the Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri had been fruitful, he said, “I presented the Iranian first vice president’s invitation for Mr. Hariri to him for a visit of Tehran at his earliest convenience and he accepted the invitation wholeheartedly, whose date would be set at an appropriate time.”
Mottaki added, “We exchanged viewpoints on Iran-Saudi relations with Lebanese officials and we favor comprehensive cooperation with Lebanon.”
He said, “The two countries’ joint committees would have sessions during the winter season of the (Christian) New Year.
Referring to Israel’s latest aggressive invasion into Gaza and Goldstone’s report on Israel’s war crimes there, he said, “The war crimes issue is in the agenda of the international organs and I talked to the Lebanese Parliament Speaker about the matter. He said that a plan is being surveyed at the parliament based on which Lebanon would ask for war damage in the course of the Zionist regime’s invasions against Lebanon.”
