Ayatollah Montazeri laid to rest

TEHRAN, Dec. 21 (MNA) -- Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri was laid to rest in the courtyard of the Shrine of Hazrat Masoumeh (SA) in Qom on Monday.

Ayatollah Montazeri passed away on Saturday evening at his home in the holy city of Qom.

He died of natural causes at the age of 87.

Tens of thousands of people marched in the funeral procession and attended the funeral of Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri.

Grand Ayatollah Yousef Sanei, Ayatollah Jalaleddin Taheri Esfahani, former judiciary chief Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, former national prosecutor general Qorban-Ali Dorri Najafabadi, defeated presidential candidates Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mahdi Karroubi, and a number of other religious and political figures also attended the funeral.

Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei’s condolence message was read out at the funeral.

Ayatollah Montazeri was a close ally of the late Imam Khomeini from the 1960s and was jailed several times by the police of the deposed shah.

During a session of the Assembly of Experts in 1985, Montazeri was designated as Imam Khomeini’s successor as Supreme Leader.

However, in 1989 it was decided that he should no longer be Imam Khomeini’s successor due to his viewpoints on political events at that time.
