Safe, united Iraq will benefit region: Iranian president

TEHRAN, Dec. 21 (MNA) – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that a safe, united, and orderly Iraq is beneficial both for the region and the Iraqi nation.

During his meeting with Barham Salih, Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) prime minister, the president said regional countries are one whole nation and should cooperate with each other.

Referring to the attempts made by the extra regional enemies to disturb the security in the region, Ahmadinejad said, “Sympathy, cooperation, and interaction among the countries in the region will contribute to the long-term security and progress in these countries.”

The nations in the region can foil enemies’ plots by strengthening their unity and brotherhood, he stated.

The Iraqi Kurdistan prime minister, for his part, asked for expansion of bilateral ties.

He also appreciated supports given by the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Iraqi people in their struggle to get rid of the Saddam dictatorship and establishing security in their country.

“The Iranian nation and government supported Iraqi people during the time of hardships; this was an invaluable and important act and Iraqis will never forget this,” he explained.

Barham Salih arrived in Tehran on Saturday morning and so far has met with Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani.

A number of KRG ministers and officials are accompanying Salih in his first visit to Tehran as the KRG prime minister.

The promotion of ties between Iran and the KRG, Kurdish leaders’ role in efforts to establish peace and security in Iraq, and issues facing the region are high on the agenda of the negotiations.
