Tighter security in border provinces to prevent possible attack during New Year celebrations

NARATHIWAT, Dec 20 (TNA) - Security forces stepped up security measures in Thailand's southern border provinces after intelligence reports warned that suspected insurgent groups planned to launch attacks during the New Year celebrations, according to a senior army official.

Lt-Gen. Kasikorn Khirisri, commander of the combined forces overseeing security in Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and four districts of Songkhla, said Sunday that intelligence reports confirmed that a number of suspected insurgents have entered Thailand via the neighbouring country and prepared to launch attacks during the New Year period.

Gen. Kasikorn said that eight districts in Yala have been closely monitored, with checkpoints being set up around the clock to detect bombs which may be hidden in any kind of vehicles.

The commander confirmed that security and surveillance measures have been tightened in the areas, while combined forces are ready to counterattack the insurgent groups if any incident occurs.

In another development, security units surrounded and raided Yuero village in Narathiwat's Bacho district on Sunday as they believed that presumed insurgents, allegedly involved in a bomb attack which killed three security volunteers and wounding two others on Saturday, still hid in the area.

Narathiwat police also increased security measures in 13 districts, particularly in crowded city and business areas following the intelligence warning of possible attack during the year end.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva admitted Sunday that during the one-year administration of his government, he is not satisfied with the solving of problems in the restive south provinces, but it does not mean that the government policy in the Muslim majority provinces has failed.

The premier added he met Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak again during the United Nations Climate Change Summit (COP15) in Copenhagen, and thanked him after the Malaysian authorities arrested three men and seized a cache of explosive devices that might be linked to the insurgency across the border in Thailand.
