Iran: Equating nuclear technology with bombs, treason against humanity
Copenhagen, Dec 19, IRNA – President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Friday that equating nuclear technology with bombs is a treason against humanity.
Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen, Ahmadinejad said certain governments were keen to monopolize all facilities so they defined nuclear technology as synonymous to nuclear bomb which is a grave mistake and a treason against all humanity.
He said using nuclear energy would undoubtedly solve part of water and air pollution problems in the world.
He made the remark in answer to a question by an American reporter who claimed there was massive opposition to use of nuclear electricity in his country.
He wondered why they criticized use of nuclear electricity in America while there were numerous nuclear powerplants operating in the US which destroyed the living environment.
He said associating nuclear “technology” with “bombs”, which is a wrong practice unfortunately exercised by some countries nowadays, meant depriving humanity from its positive applications.
In answer to a question by another reporter on the upcoming meeting between the US and Russian presidents on curbing nuclear arms proliferation, he said Iran certainly welcomed and encouraged non-proliferation of nuclear arms and had even proposed formation of an independent group on international disarmament and arms non-proliferation to the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Ahmadinejad believed the disarmament initiatives were unsuccessful because those countries which owned nuclear bombs themselves were in charge of banning production of such bombs so they were naturally getting nowhere.
Another reporter asked Iranian president what Iran had to offer to guarantee that it was not using its nuclear technology for military purposes and why Iran was not responding to the initiatives by the international community.
Ahmadinejad answered: “What are your criteria for authentic guarantees? By guarantees, do you mean that you have to be a member of an international organization and abide with its regulations or do you mean that you have to act according to the whims of just a few members of this organization?”
He said Iran’s non-deviation from international regulations in its nuclear programs has been officially acknowledged in six documents of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) while its responses to six basic questions by the same organization have been endorsed in an official document.
Ahmadinejad then said: “What is basically meant by the international community? There are about 200 countries in the world now 118 of which – who are members of the Non-Aligned Movement- have supported Iran rights to the nuclear energy with another 57 countries supporting Iran’s nuclear program.”
He asked, “True, some European countries as well as the US are definitely against Iran but does this mean that only this handful of countries make up the international community with other countries having no place in the world?"
Ahmadinejad continued: “how is it that the US government that owns nuclear bombs itself accuses other countries only on the basis of “probability” of deviations in the future?
He said the US animosity against Tehran was actually due to the fact that Iran barred its way towards gaining dominance over the Middle East energy resources.
As for tokens of the dual standards practiced by the US government, the president noted that the US possessed no document proving Iran’s deviation from international regulations while the country had solid evidence showing that the US was stockpiling eight thousand nuclear warheads while Israel had 400 nuclear war heads and still enjoyed the backing of the US administration.
He said such behaviors by certain countries were no longer effective and had already met with failure.
A reporter asked about Ahmadinejad’s opinion on differences between Bush and Obama administrations in political terms.
He said Iran was not totally disappointed and was still waiting to see real differences between the two administrations but was hoping to see such differences becoming apparent in practice.
He said Iran welcomed the motto of “change” and even voiced readiness to help fundamental changes but seeing that President Obama was not making use of opportunities to bring about changes worried Iran, creating the notion that President Obama was just continuing with the policies of his predecessor.
In answer to another question, President Ahmadinejad elaborated on Iran’s various programs and plans to reduce environment pollution and said one of Iran’s proposals to the summit was to make those countries which have the highest military budget in the world, spend a portion of it on improving living environment conditions.
