PM Abhisit urges world leaders to change history by joining to combat climate change
COPENHAGEN, Dec 18 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva urged countries worldwide to jointly rewrite projected course of the world's history by joining forces in tackling the challenge of climate change before it is too late.
Mr Abhisit's remarks were made at the conference of the High Level Segment (HLS) of the 15th session of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP15) and the 5th Conference of Parties serving as the meeting of Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP5) at the Bella Center.
Representing both Thailand and the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), as its chair, the Thai leader is one of the 60 world leaders speaking at Copenhagen.
He told the world leaders meeting that Thailand is concerned about climate change and urges all countries to be part of the solution to this problem before it is too late.
Each country can contribute to its ability, Mr Abhisit said, stating that measures adopted to address climate change should not affect each country's development.
The measures should not become obstacles to trade and investment, or be a condition to bar trade and investment in developing countries, he said.
The Thai premier reported on Thailand's efforts to tackle global warming, restore natural resources, particularly forests, and promote the use of alternative energy and using energy more efficiently.
After the conference, the prime minister went to Christiansborg Palace where Denmark's Queen Margrethe II and Prince Consort Henrik are hosting a gala dinner for world leaders attending the conference.
On Friday, Mr Abhisit joined the primary conference at Bella Centre where the Danish prime minister spoke on the theme, "Looking Beyond Copenhagen," prior to the main conference session.
The Danish prime minister hosted a luncheon to honour world leaders and delegation chiefs.
Mr Abhisit, on Friday, will hold a press conference for Thai media at the Thai embassy, followed by a dinner hosted by the Thai ambassador to Denmark, Cholchineepan Chiranond, to honour the prime minister and the Thai delegates.
On Saturday, Mr Abhisit is expected to meet the Thai press again to present the results of the Climate Change Summit before his return flight to Bangkok. (TNA)
