BABY HAS FOUR ARMS, FOUR LEGS AS OVUM CELLS FAILED TO SEPARATE

Garut, W Java, June 7 (ANTARA) - A baby girl in Garut district, West Java, Indonesia, who could have been a single-ovum Siamese twin, was born with four arms, four legs, one chest, one heart and one head apparently because the ovum cells in the womb failed to separate properly, a local doctor said. The baby's mother, Enung (24), a resident of Malangbong, Garut, West Java, suffered from a disorder medically known as 'intra utrorin' which might have been caused by nutritional deficiency, infection or trauma, the head of Dr Slamet Public Hospital in Garut, Dr. Hj. Wijayanti Utoyo, SPM, said here over the weekend. The baby was actually born normally on Friday (June 6) at 7.10 pm after nine months in the womb but it died the following day, Saturday (June 7) at 3.35 am. Enung who once went to a hospital in Tasikmalaya district, West Java, for an ultra sonography check, believed her baby would be normal as the check showed the fetus had one head. WiJayanti said, even if the baby had not died, it would have been difficult to conduct a separation operation on it as it had only one chest and one heart. Enung whose first daughter is normal is now still in the hospital to recover after giving birth to the four-armed and four legged baby.
