Cuban cartoonist grabs grand prize at Iran biennial

TEHRAN, Dec. 16 (MNA) -- The Cuban cartoonist Aristides Esteban Hernandez Guerrero (Ares) won the Grand prize of the 9th Tehran International Cartoon Biennial.


The winners of this edition were announced during a ceremony at the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Arts on Tuesday.


The biennial was held concurrently at the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Arts and the Ahvaz Museum of Contemporary Art from November 22 to December 16.


The following is a list of the winners in different sections:


* Cartoon Section (fear theme sub-section):

First Prize: Yuri Kosoboukin (Ukraine)
Second Prize: Mihai Ignat (Romania)
Third Prize: Mohammad Akbari (Iran)
Special Prize: Saeid Sadeqi (Iran)


* Cartoon Section (free theme sub-section):

First Prize: Yuri Kosoboukin (Ukraine)
Second Prize: Mihai Ignat (Romania)
Third Prize: Mahmud Azadnia (Iran)
Special Prize: Shahrokh Heidari (Iran)

* Political Portraits Section:

First Prize: Oktay Bingol (Turkey)
Second Prize: Mohammadreza Dustmohammadi (Iran)
Third Prize: Dalcio Machado (Brazil)
Special Prize: Hadi Tabasi


* Comic Strip Section:

First Prize: Xiao Qiang Hou (China)
Second Prize: Angel Boligan (Mexico)
Third Prize: Patrick Vergueiro (Brazil)
Special Prize: Amir Hossein Sazvar (Iran)


A total of 4,238 artworks were submitted to the gala’s secretariat out of which 839 works were put on display at the exhibition. Turkey, China and Brazil respectively were the most active participants in the event.
