PHAYAO, Dec 15 (TNA) – Over 40 illegal North Korean migrants were arrested on Monday in Thailand’s northern province of Phayao.

Fourteen were arrested while on a coach headed for Bangkok and were later taken to a police station in the provincial seat.

According to the initial investigation, the party left North Korea due to its famine and their facing the possibility of starvation, via China’s Yunnan province. Leaving China in the Xishuangbanna region, the group passed through Myanmar and finally entered Mae Sai district in northern Chiang Rai province of Thailand.

A local police officer disclosed that 44 illegal North Koreans have been arrested for the past two weeks.

Most of the illegals said they fled to Thailand as it has abundant food supplies and they wanted to seek asylum in a third country. (TNA)
