210 Thais repatriated by Malaysian authorities

SONGKHLA, Dec 14 (TNA) - Malaysian authorities repatriated 210 illegal Thai workers to Thailand on Monday without taking legal action or fining them, as part of a project to assist victims trafficked from Thailand to Malaysia.

The repatriated workers were aged from 17 to 35 years, of whom 121 were males and 89 females. Of the 210 persons, nine were victims of trafficking.

Thailand's Deputy Interior Minister Thaworn Senniam on Monday presided over a ceremony receiving the 210 workers back to their homeland from Malaysian authorities at a local community hall in Songkhla’s Sadao district as a result of Thai and Malaysian cooperation to aid trafficked victims and falsely engaged Thais in Malaysia.

According to Mr Thaworn, Thais arrested by the Malaysian authorities are classified in four categories: those entering without a passport, workers illegally entering the country, women trafficked by sex trade syndicates, and labourers who were sold as fishery workers.

The cooperation project aims at helping repatriate Thai trafficked victims in Malaysia and developing the two countries’ cooperation in creating a strong working mechanism to prevent and tackle the ongoing human
trafficking issue.

Mr Thaworn said the project would bring about developing sustainable cooperation of both countries in the repatriation and rehabilitation of victims and a crackdown on criminals both locally and internationally.

The goals also include creating a database system of victims and human trafficking processes and offering follow-up assistance to labourers to prevent them from being trafficked.

According to the Interior Ministry, Thailand has cooperated with Malaysia in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on tackling human trafficking in line with the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) policy. (TNA)
