Iraq’s security important to neighbors: Majlis speaker

TEHRAN, Dec. 13 (MNA) – Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has said that Iraq’s security and stability are highly important to its neighbors.

Larijani made the remarks in meeting with Sharif Ali Bin al-Hussein, the chairman of the Iraqi Constitutional Monarchy Movement, on Sunday.

Larijani called for a collective measure to help Iraqis establish security and stability in their country.

He also condemned the recent terrorist attacks in Iraq, saying terrorists seek to sow discord between the people and derail efforts in the run-up to the parliamentary election, he added.

A series of car bombs on Tuesday ripped through Baghdad in Iraq's deadliest attack in six weeks, a brutal reminder of the threat still posed by an insurgency that has killed thousands since the 2003 U.S. invasion. Health Ministry officials said 77 people died, but police sources put the figure higher at 112.

The attacks came hours before the government announced March 7 as the date for the parliamentary election, ending weeks of political bickering that had delayed the vote from mid-January.

Larijani wished a successful parliamentary election in which all political groups will enthusiastically participate.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Larijani called Tehran-Bagdad relations strategic and important and called for the expansion of comprehensive ties.

Sharif Ali thanked Iran for making efforts to help establish stability in Iraq after the overthrow of the Saddam regime, saying it is essential that the two countries increase their ties.

Sharif Ali said the recent terrorist incidents in Iraq were conducted by the remnants of the previous regime in order show that the government is incapable of maintaining security.
