Manama, Dec 13, IRNA -- Iraq’s Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said on Saturday that the Islamic Republic of Iran plays a leading role to restore regional peace and security.
Zebari made the remarks in a meeting with Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki on the sidelines of the conference on regional security being held in Manama.
Lauding Tehran's support for Iraq, he called the visit with his Iranian counterpart as significant to expand cooperation between the two countries.
There are ample untapped grounds for expansion of economic and commercial cooperation between the two countries which should be further explored, he said.
Mottaki for his part strongly condemned the recent terrorist bomb blasts which took the lives of many innocent Iraqis.
Those who seek to foment insecurity and destabilize democracy in Iraq are behind such sinister moves, he said.
Given Iraq’s rich culture and civilization, the country should find its real status in regional developments, and its upcoming elections will open a new chapter to this effect, Mottaki concluded.
