Malaysia returning 400 illegal Thai workers Monday

SONGKHLA, Dec 12 (TNA) - Thailand's Deputy Interior Minister Thaworn Senniam on Saturday said that the Malaysian authorities will repatriate some 400 illegal Thai workersback to Thailand on Monday with no legal action taken against them as birthday acknowledgement of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit.

Mr Thaworn said that Thai Immigration Police and the administrative committee of Police Region 9 have coordinated with the Malaysian authorities to help Thais in degraded circumstances in 13 states of Malaysia..

The minister said that Thais who were arrested by the Malaysian authorities are classified into four categories: those entering without a passport, workers illegally entering the country, women trafficking by sex trade syndicates, and Thai labourers who were sold as fishery workers.

Mr Thaworn said that Malaysia agreed to cooperate with Thailand and will send some 400 Thais back to their homeland without taking any legal action or fining them. They will be brought to the Thai-Malaysian border at Songkhla's Sadao district on Monday.

The minister added that the interior ministry is also coordinating with Indonesian authorities wanting to help Thais lured to work there by human trafficking groups.

"If anyone is seeking help in case a family member of family was falsely entrapped to work in Malaysia or Indonesia they should inform the authorities at hotline number 18882 around the clock or let me know directly," said Mr Thaworn.

Mr Thaworn said that the ministry will create good understanding among Thai labourers regarding correct legal procedures to enter Malaysia to work. At the same time it will coordinate with local authorities to publicise the information to their people as about 80 per cent of illegal Thai workers are from the five provinces bordering Malaysia.
