PM: Thais disappointed by football team's early exit from SEA Games
BANGKOK, Dec 12 (TNA) -- Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said Saturday he believes the Thai people are disappointed after Thailand’s football team made an early departure from the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) after losing 2-1 to Malaysia awith a first round knock out.
Leaving the tournament in the first round might be felt as an embarassment, the prime minister suggested.
Thailand’s football team has won the last eight SEA Games tournaments, losing for the first time on Friday to Malaysia during the session of the Games being held in the Lao capital of Vientiane.
Needing only a draw to qualify for the last four of the football competition, eight-time defending champions Thailand took the lead seven minutes after half-time but conceded two goals during the last ten miniutes.
“The Thai people may be disappointed but morale must be given to every player as every one had made an effort with the objective of winning the match,” Mr Abhisit said.
While he did not watch the match, Mr Abhisit said he believed that “every concerned party would review whatever mistakes were made.”
Athletes from 11 nations are competing in 28 disciplines at the 10-day biennial SEA Games which end next Friday.
Participating countries are Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. (TNA)
