MONAS INCIDENT LINKED TO GOVT'S DELAY IN ISSUING JOINT DECREE ON AHMADIYAH By Eliswan Azly

Jakarta, Jun 6 (ANTARA) - The incident at the national monument (Monas) between activists of the National Alliance for Freedom of Religion and Beliefs (AKKBB) and those of the Islam Defenders Front (FPI) was linked by some religious leaders and legislators to the government's sluggish action in handling of Ahmadiyah issue.

"It is the price the government has to pay if the issuance of a long overdue policy is often been delayed," Deputy General Chairman of the Crescent Star Party Hamdan Zoelva said here Thursday.

According to him, many parties have reminded the government of the importance of a quick decision and allowing the situation to become uncertain, whereas the Ahmadiyah issue would be able to end with a clash.

Hamdan who is also a legislator representing the Crescent Star Faction in the House of Representatives said he was worried about a possible clash to happen not only in Jakarta, but also in other parts of the country. "This will worsen the situation."If the government has already issued a joint decree of three ministers - home minister, religious minister and the attorney general - pertaining to a ban on the Ahmadiyah in Indonesia, Hamdan saw that such the violent clash would never recur. Such uncertainty could be used to provoke the people at grass root level.

It is for that reason, he urged the government to immediately issue the decree on Ahmadiyah to be specified in a long-awaited joint three ministerial decree.

Sharing the same opinion with Hamdan was Ahmad Sumargono, an adviser of the Islamic Adherents Forum (FUI) who said that the cause of the national monument's incident was often linked to a delay in issuing a decision on the banning of the Ahmadiyah sect.

"We demand the government to immediately ban the Ahmadiyah in order to have peace prevail in the community, because a delay in issuing the decree is seen as the cause," he said on Thursday.

Sumargono deeply deplored many parties who had been drafting and discussing the joint decree (SKB) on the banning of Ahmadiyah but could not provide an answer to the issuance of the joint decree by the government.

In addition, Sumargono who is also Chairman of the Indonesian Islamic Brotherhood Movement (GPMI) suspected that there was some form of foreign intervention in the national monument incident referring to the United States.

"This is apparent from the visit of USCharge d'Affaires John A Helen to the victims of the AKKBB," said Sumargono who also questioned the US attitude of later holding a press conference to slam the incident and urge the Indonesian government to take action against the perpetrators.

Sumargo also expressed his intention to the government to verify each foreign assistance received from a number of top figures and institutions supporting the AKKBB.

In the meantime, Chairman of the Indonesian Council of Ulemas (MUI) Amidhan trusted law enforcers to settle the Monas incident involving members of the Islam Defenders Front (FPI) without ignoring the cause of the attacks.

It is much better to see the case profoundly and the causes of the incident which had instigated FPI activist to attack AKKBB activists. This should be done in the hope that no parties are treated in an unjust manner through legal mechanism, as the outbreak of the attack was inseparable from provocation, he said, adding that the public should know that.

In addition, he also recommended the government and the law enforcer to make a retrospection as the incident might happen on account of the government's procrastinated action in taking an immediate stance against a certain sect (Ahmadiyah).

Amidhan saw that what AKKBB activists had done was a provocation and trying to instigate the members of FPI. One of AKKBB action was by including representatives of other religions instead of Islam to defend the misleading Ahmadiyah sect.

"The issue on Ahmadiyah is the internal affairs of Moslems, but AKKBB list the support of other religions. This is what we see as unfair. Ahmadiyah is an internal affairs of Moslems and therefore other religions even Islam should not intervene," Amidhan said.
