POLICE MOUNT SEARCH FOR MUNARWAN IN CIREBON

Cirebon, June 5 (ANTARA) - Local police have mounted a search for Munarwan, the "Islamic Legion commander" wanted in connection with the Monas Square incident in Jakarta, who is believed to be hiding in Cirebon's northern coastal region, a spokesman said.

"It's quite possible Munarwan has escaped to the Cirebon region. In fact, I have been instructed by the National Police Headquarters to look for him in this region," Cirebon Regional Police Chief Senior Commissioner Nasser Amir told the press here Thursday.

He said police detectives were deployed in the field on Wednesday to scour locations in the region where the fugitive might have taken refuge.

Meanwhile, at least one thousand people coordinated by the Cirebon Nahdlatul Ulama Extended Family (KBNU) on Thursday staged rallies in the city condemning the violence committed by Islam Defenders' Front (FPI) in the Monas Square incident in Jakarta last Sunday. They also demanded the FPI's disbandment and prosecution of the perpetrators of the violence.

The crowd gathered outside the Cirebon district transportation office in Sumber sub district and then marched about one kilometer to the Cirebon district police headquarters.

Outside the police office, the demonstrators also produced dresses resembling the white robes usually worn by FPI members and burned them to express their disdain.

From the police office, the demonstrators moved to the Cirebon District Legislative Assembly building office where they repeated their actions and demands.
