Thai PM receives UNESCO regional heritage award for Samchuk community

SUPHAN BURI, Dec 11 (TNA) – Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on behalf of the Samchuk community on Friday received the 2009 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award Friday morning in the central province of Suphan Buri.

Dr Molly Lee, director of UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Asia and Pacific Regional Bureau for Education presented the award plaque to the premier. Certificates were also presented for the project team members, including academics, scholars, students and the Samchuk Community Committee.

The award ceremony was held in the Old Market district in Suphan Buri, about 100 kilometres north of Bangkok.

The outstanding restoration and conservation of the Samchuk community and Old Market in Suphan Buri was recognised and received an Award of Merit in the 2009 annual UNESCO Asia-Pacific Regional Heritage Awards.

The UNESCO jurors praised the restoration and conservation project saying it will have a major impact in raising awareness about grassroots heritage conservation and that it is an important model for empowering other historic communities in Thailand.

A total of 48 entries from 14 countries in the region were submitted.

Apart from Thailand’s Samchuk Community and Old Market District, three other 2009 awards were presented to heritage communities in China, India and New Zealand.

Besides Samchuk Community and the Old Market district, six other projects from Thailand received the UNESCO Heritage Awards, including Wat Pongsanuk in the northern province of Lampang and the Amphawa Canal Community in the central province of Samut Songkram. (TNA)
