Buck's wife rubbishes child sex claims
The wife of former Olympic swimming coach Terry Buck has branded child sex abuse
claims against her late husband as "lies" and says his accuser was a lifelong family
friend.
Laraine Buck has fired back at former Olympian Greg Rogers who has renewed claims
that he and his brother were sexually abused by Buck as swimmers in the 1960s.
"I can say with certainty in my heart and an assurance that they are lies," Ms Buck
told the Nine Network.
"How can I be sure? I can be sure in the comfort of knowing the person, my husband
Terry, for the last 40 years."
Mr Rogers won silver and gold at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City and says he and
his brother were abused as youngsters by Buck, who died in a 2005 tractor accident.
Police began investigating abuse allegations in 1998, and were handed a list of 29
other alleged victims, including four Olympic swimmers.
One was a celebrated gold medallist, and two surfing champions were on the list,
News Ltd has reported.
Strike Force Solano spent five months investigating the allegations after the Sydney
Olympic Games, but the case was dropped in early 2001 because of insufficient
evidence.
It has also emerged that the two men were long time friends, Mr Rogers was godfather
to Buck's youngest daughter and that they had falling out over a business deal.
"Greg has been within our family ... for the 40 years of our married life and there
was a trust," Ms Buck said.
"I just thank God he's (Terry) not alive because the life he's led and of the good
he's done, this would have not served anyone."
