Syrian President receives Iran’s Defense Minister Vahidi

Damascus, Dec 10, IRNA – Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad here Wednesday evening received visiting Iranian Defense and Armed Forces Logistical Support Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi.

According to IRNA correspondent in Damascus, the Syrian president and the Iranian minister talked about issues of mutual interest, regional developments, Iran-Syria cooperation, and particularly defense affairs, during the meeting at Ash-Sha’ab Place of Damascus in the presence of the Syrian Defense Minister Ali Muhammad Habib.

Assad supporting broadening and deepening bilateral relations in defense field, said, “Such relations play a serious role in
strengthening the foundations of regional security and stability.”

Vahidi, too, conveyed President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s warm greetings to his Syrian counterpart, adding, “The two countries’ high ranking leaders’ will is the best backing for the two countries’ comprehensive relations and broad level cooperation in all possible fields.”

Pointing out the political congruity between Tehran and Damascus, the Iranian Defense Minister said, “Cooperation between Iran and Syria and unlimited support of the two countries for one another has set the strong foundations of resistance in the political and security literatures of the region and affected the regional equations in favor of resistance.”

He stressed the need for improving the level of regional cooperation and broadening its level to include defense and security fields, arguing, “In that case our cooperation can play a decisive role in establishment of peace and stability in the sensitive Middle East region.”

Brigadier General Vahidi appreciated the wise, sagacious, and unifying sands adopted by the Syria, reiterating, “The role of the Syrian President and leader is quite prominent and decisive in this regard.”

The IRI Defense and Armed Forces Logistical Support Minister said that increased defense might and boosted preventive capability are among the most important achievements of Iran-Syria defense cooperation.

Vahidi added, “Efforts aimed at presenting a practical, comprehensive joint regional defense system is possible relying on stressing the shared interests, commonalties, and cooperation, free from the hazardous and destabilizing presence of foreign military forces.”

The Syrian defense minister, too, said that Wednesday’s talks show that Tehran-Damascus relations have improved significantly over the past few years.

The level of Iran-Syria cooperation in the area of defense shows that the two countries are determined to respond to regional challenges and to make efforts to strengthen regional security, he added.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Habib said that Syria supports Iran’s right to make use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

The enemy’s main objectives are to undermine regional security and to plunder the region’s resources, but Iran and Syria have always thwarted their efforts, he noted. /end
