“About Elly” to represent Iranian cinema at Golden Globe Awards

TEHRAN, Dec. 9 (MNA) -- Iran’s “About Elly” is competing with 68 other movies for a foreign language Golden Globe award this year.


Organizers of the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards announced their list of contenders on December 9 upon which Asghar Farhadi’s “About Elly” is observed.


“About Elly” is also representing Iranian cinema in the category of Best Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards in 2010.


The movie has so far won several international awards. It brought a Silver Bear for best director at the Berlinale 2009 and was also awarded in the Best Narrative Feature category at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2009. It also grabbed two prizes at the third annual Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA).


Starring Shahab Hosseini, Golshifteh Farahani, Mani Haqiqi, Saber Abar and Merila Zarei, “About Elly” tells the story of middle class Iranians whose trip to the Caspian Sea turns into a disaster as they try to maintain their social customs.


Palme d’Or winner “The White Ribbon” (Germany), “Can Not Live Without You” (Taiwan), “Cell 211” (Spain), “Chameleon” (Hungary), “City Of Life And Death” (China), “The Dancer And the Thief” (Spain), “A Day At The Museum” (France), “Delhi-6” (India) and “Eden Is West”(France) are among a record of 69 foreign-language films.


Also included are “The Girl On The Train” (France), “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”(Sweden), “God’s Offices” (France/Belgium), “Grandpa Is Dead” (Philippines), “I Killed My Mother” (Canada) and “I Saw The Sun”(Turkey).


Five nominees will be announced on December 15 and the awards event will take place on January 17, 2010.
