Four killed in restive South ahead of two leaders' visit
NARATHIWAT, Dec 8 (TNA) – Insurgent-violence continued unabated in Narathiwat with two incidents claiming four lives in a single day Tuesday, hours before the Thai and Malaysian prime ministers’ visit to the region.
Two rangers and one suspected insurgent were killed in a clash in Ruso district Tuesday afternoon. One ranger was wounded and sent to hospital.
An unknown number of gunmen ambushed eight soldiers on four motorcycles as they patrolled a route that Thai prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and his Malaysian counterpart Najib Razak will use during their visit Wednesday.
In a separate attack, Mayayi Kadeng, chief of the sub-district administrative office organisation in Bacho district, was shot dead by an unknown group of suspected insurgents in a pick-up truck in the evening.
He died at the scene after being shot three times in the chest and his left arm.
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak is visiting Thailand at the invitation of the Thai government.
The two prime ministers discussed the situation in Thailand's restive South and condemned the perpetration of violence by individuals and ill-intentioned groups against innocent civilians in the region, particularly women and children.
Malaysia reaffirmed its support for the resolution of the problems through peaceful means.
However, the Malaysian leader insisted that the insurgency in the southern border provinces is Thailand’s internal issue, but Malaysia is ready to support Thailand in tackling the problem as requested.
Meanwhile, Mr Abhisit said the government will not negotiate with insurgents, and that everything will be done under the law.
He and the Malaysian leader are due to travel to the Thai-Malaysian border province of Narathiwat on Wednesday to witness a ceremony to rename a bridge spanning the river bordering the two countries as the "Friendship Bridge" and visit a Muslim school. (TNA)
