Thai, Malaysian premiers to resolve issue of residents with divided loyalties
BANGKOK, Dec 8 (TNA) – The Thai and Malaysian prime ministers agreed to resolve the problem of local residents holding dual nationality in Thailand’s southern border provinces.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and his Malaysian counterpart Najib Razak told a news conference on Tuesday after the Fourth Annual Consultation in conjunction with the three-day official visit of the Malaysian leader.
The two leaders agreed to strengthen their cooperation in security, economy and education with trust and respect toward each other.
The two countries will push forward all pending mutual agreements, with the problem of local residents holding dual nationality an urgent issue to be resolved together.
The two prime ministers also discussed the situation in Thailand's restive South and condemned the perpetration of violence by individuals and ill-intentioned groups against innocent civilians in the region, particularly women and children. Malaysia reaffirmed its support for the resolution of the problems through peaceful means.
However, the Malaysian leader insisted that the insurgency in the southern border provinces is Thailand’s internal issue, but Malaysia is ready to support Thailand in tackling the problem when being requested.
"Malaysia stands ready to be your partner but a partner who will respect that this is essentially a domestic problem for Thailand," Mr Najib said.
Meanwhile, Mr Abhisit said the government will not negotiate with insurgents, and that everything will be done under the law.
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak is visiting Thailand at the invitation of the Thai government. He and Mr Abhisit are due to travel to the Thai-Malaysian border province of Narathiwat on Wednesday to witness a ceremony to rename a bridge spanning the river bordering the two countries as the "Friendship Bridge" and visit a Muslim school.
Both leaders agreed to continue implementing the Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) in Thailand's southern border provinces under the 3Es Approach concerning education, employment and entrepreneurship, in order to promote socio-economic development in those areas. (TNA)
