Iran attends 4th session of APA in Indonesia

Kuala Lumpur, Dec 8, IRNA – The 4th session of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA), underway in Bandug city of Indonesia, is being attended by Iran's parliamentary officials.

Representatives from 39 APA member states as well as Iran’s First-Vice Speaker of the Majlis (Parliament) Mohammad-Hassan Abutorabi-Fard and Head of the Majlis Cultural Commission Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel are among the participants.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and country’s Speaker of the House of Representatives Marzuki Ali are hosting the session.

The session will discuss different issues pertaining to the Asian continent in various economic, social, political and cultural arenas.

APA was founded in 2006 out of the collective desire and concerted effort of legislators and members of the civil society in Asia to promote peace in general and in the Asian region, in particular. It comprises of 40 member parliaments and 18 observers.

Each member parliament has a specific number of seats in the assembly based on the size of their population. The number of total seats, and therefore, the number of votes, is currently 206.

The 7th session of the APA General Assembly was held in Tehran, in November 2006. The then speaker of Iran’s parliament Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel was elected as the first president of the APA for a two-year term./end
